"I was totally stunned the first time that I saw the
kilometre lance (KL) speed ski slope at Vars, France. I couldn't
comprehend what was about to happen on that sheer ice wall reaching high into the sky.
That was back in January 1994, and French downhill demon Christian Taillefer was
about to make history by becoming the first ever mountain biker to actually ride down the
thing. It seemed crazy. I mean, we couldn't even stand up on the near vertical
slopes, and this guy was going to hurl himself down at some ridiculous speed.
If Taillefer survived he would be making death defying history by becoming
the fastest mountain biker on the planet. That day Christian hit 111kph (97mph)
within 300 metres and became a living legend."
